A sprain is when a ligament (the tissue connecting bones at a joint) gets stretched or torn.
A strain is when a muscle or tendon (the tissue connecting muscle to bone) gets stretched or torn.
Common examples include low back strain, when you “tweak” the paraspinal muscles (surrounding the spine), and they hurt due to spasm. Also, an ankle sprain involves stretching/damaging the ligaments (tough tissues connecting bones together) when the joint is overstretched/rolled, and/or twisted against force.
Common Symptoms
Pain in the injured area
Swelling or bruising
Stiffness or difficulty moving the joint or muscle
Muscle spasms (for strains)
Weakness or instability (for sprains)
Key Points
Mild sprains and strains often improve with rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE).
Severe injuries may need medical evaluation, physical therapy, or even a brace.
Avoid using the injured area too soon to prevent further damage.
