A UTI, or urinary tract infection, is an infection that happens anywhere in your urinary system — most often in the bladder or urethra (the tube that carries urine out of your body).

It usually happens when bacteria (most often from the skin or digestive tract) get into the urinary tract and start to multiply.

Common symptoms include:

UTIs are very common, especially in women, and are usually easy to treat with antibiotics. Drinking plenty of water and urinating after sexual activity can help prevent them.
